Heath Benedict, an offensive lineman who played at Newberry College and who was expected to be a mid-round draft choice in 2008, died on Wednesday.
Benedict, 25, played initially at Tennessee and then transferred to the Division II school. The Sporting News draft guide had Benedict ranked as the ninth-best guard in the class, and projected him to be a fourth-round selection.
A source with knowledge of the situation says that police have ruled out foul play. Published reports indicate that drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as well.

Rest in peace, Heath.
This stuff is truly sickening. If you remember a week ish ago another college football player from the state of Florida, Central Florida, I believe, passed away. Ereck Plancher died after strength and conditioning drills.
These two deaths should not be brushed off, and the way things are done need to be looked into. Sure, it’s football, and you have to do a lot of freaky physical things in order to make it.
But is football more important than staying alive?

My guess would be a heart problem. I agree with Brian, this is an awful thing that is all too common. Unfortunately, I am not sure there is anything anyone can do about it. Or, at least they aren’t willing to do it.
