Our good friends at Sporting News have handed out their annual NFL executive of the year award.
And the winner is Jerry Reese of the Giants.
Now, wait. It isn’t. But it should be.
Instead, 19 of the 48 NFL executives voted for Packers G.M. Ted Thompson. Only nine voted for Reese. Eight voted for Pats V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli.
We don’t want to take anything away from what Thompson has accomplished, but Reese delivered a Lombardi in his first year on the job, successfully managing a previously dysfunctional collection of players led by a reformed Soup Nazi who while coaching for his job turned in the job of a lifetime.

yes, reese drafted well, kudos to him — but that doesn’t make him exec of the year!
he assembled a few pieces, but if you give reese the award, then give another to ernie accorsi as well, the team is largely fashioned in HIS image.

Sorry, but take away the Packers franchise QB and they don’t finish .500. The Giants traded Grant because he was fourth on the depth chart. Obviously, keeping Bradshaw turned out to be the smarter move. So what exactly did the Packers end up proving last year, but that Favre did have some football left? At least until he faced the Giants.
You want to compare head to head? The Giants walked into the Packers “mighty” Lambeau field and BEAT THEM.
Give Thompson this token popularity award. I’m sure it takes the sting off of that playoff loss.

I’m not a fan because I have a negative opinion of our GM? That’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard. Let’s all take a trip back in time, 3 years ago when Uncle Ted took over. The Packers were coming off a playoff appearance and 3 out of 4 NFC North titles. So let’s not forget that this team was a perennial playoff team when he took over. As for Moss, how could he have not improved the team? He wanted to play for a winner, and the Packers were winners last year. And saying we didn’t need him because our receivers were good enough is like saying we don’t need Tomlinson because our running backs are good enough. Just remember, nobody ever complains about having too much talent on their team.

I love endless arguments about who “should be” the winner of an award. Especially when they mix in statements about on-field records.
Fact is, only the people with a vote matter. Had these voters given it to Condi Rice or Soupy Sales, then they’d, in fact, be “deserving.” Why? Because the voters said so. There is no reality other than their vote.
Of course, sports voters suck at their jobs. If the BCS system were used in the NFL, the Patriots would’ve defeated the Cowboys at this year’s Super Bowl.
The only things that matter are the games, wins and losses. The rest is pretty meaningless. Or to quote another old Packers GM, all this blather is just a “fart in the wind.”

@75jbass… the pack proved much more than favre having football left. oh, newsflash too, he still had football left, even after facing the giants. just because he had 2 INT’s doesn’t mean he couldn’t play anymore. he also threw 2 TD passes while eli threw none in that game (couglin just put him in a better position to manage the game better on that day with the running game the giants had going). favre’s had a number of disappointing games to end the season… every player and team does unless they win the super bowl.
another newsflash, if the giants would’ve come in and beat green bay at the “mighty” lambeau (as you call it) before 2002 when atlanta and vick did it, then it would be more of a story, but since then, minnesota has done it too. that mystique hasn’t been there for awhile… since holmgren bolted for the coach/gm job in seattle. also, the giants were 3-5 at home this year (0-4 over their last 4 regular season home games); if eli was playing at home in the championship game, no way do the giants win… he couldn’t stand the pressure of the n.y. media in that situation. giants had a string of luck in the playoffs that came down to the last minute or O.T. versus dallas, g.b., and n.e.

@fav-rah,
1. The Falcons and Vikings did not beat the Packers in the third coldest game in NFL (recorded) history. The Giants did, and cold weather was supposed to favor the Packers in that game, as it usually is (Frozen Tundra, Mystique of Lambeau Field, etc.).
2. Maybe I’m the only one, but the phrase “string of luck in the playoffs” sounds ridiculous to me. IMO, no team gets to the Super Bowl and beats an undefeated team as a result of a “string of luck.”

@Shawshank… who said anything about the weather? i was talking about the fact that the packers were undefeated, at home, in the playoffs, until the falcons came in and beat them. i never once mentioned how cold it was. however, i’m not surprised that favre didn’t have a great game in this type of weather. recall the bears game in chicago this past season, more windy than anything, but very cold as well and before the nfc championship vs. the giants, favre said that bears game was the worst weather conditions he’s ever played in. as far as the luck i mentioned that the giants had vs. the cowboys, pack, and patriots, just look at how it came down to the last drive for each of those games for the giants to pull out the win. the pieces fell into place for them in each game. if you want to call it skill, go right ahead as that’s your opinion, but i call it luck (especially with the giants being a 10-6 team playing a 16-0 team). Got L-U-C-K-Y!
