Jets wide receiver Laveranues Coles has made no secret that he would like a new deal with the team.

In a sign that he’s likely to get one, Coles showed up to the Jets’ voluntary off-season training program on Monday. The Star-Ledger reports that the deal he’ll make with the team won’t necessarily be a new contract this year, but it may be an assurance that he’ll get a new contract next year if he stays healthy, or that the team will let him seek a trade.

Last year the Jets had a veteran who was similarly unhappy with his contract. In that case, they ultimately traded the veteran, guard Pete Kendall, and their offensive line struggled without him all season. The Jets may have decided to be more flexible in their dealings with Coles than they were with Kendall, as they learned last season that a team can continue to pay the price for an unhappy veteran even after he’s gone.

Defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson still hasn’t reported for off-season conditioning, and it’s still not clear whether he’ll be traded or released, although it is clear that he won’t stay with the Jets unless he agrees to a pay cut.
