Quarterback Quinn Gray, mired for all of his career as the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart of an AFC South team that continuously looks up at the Colts, is poised to become . . . the No. 3 quarterback on the depth chart of an AFC South team that continuously looks up at the Colts.
Gray tells the Houston Chronicle that he plans to sign with the Texans, even though his visit with the team hasn’t officially begin. Gray says it will be a one-year deal worth $635,000, with $40,000 to sign.
For a fifth-year NFL player, that’s the minimum salary.
Gray also visited Oakland and Green Bay, and has a visit scheduled for Oakland that he doesn’t plan to take. With the Packers, he would have had a better shot of being the No. 2 quarterback, and definitely a better shot at making the roster. In Houston, there’s no way that he’ll leapfrog Sage Rosenfels as the primary backup to Matt Schaub. And with more teams keeping only two quarterbacks on the active roster to start the season, there’s a chance that Gray won’t even have a job when the real games start.
So maybe, just maybe, the Texans have told Gray that they’re still thinking about trading Rosenfels. A deal was nearly done not long ago, but they wanted a second-round pick, but the Minnesota Vikings were willing to part with only a third-rounder.
In our view, Gray wouldn’t be prepared to take the minimum one-year salary if he thought that he’d merely be an extra arm for training camp and the preseason. Thus, we tend to think that Gray knows something is up, and that he very well might be No. 2 on the depth chart once the season begins.

He is getting paid like a 3rd stringer. I think Gray at this point is just happy to have a job.

You would think the jags would want him back. He must stink if they won’t give him more than that. Who else do they have behind Garrard?

I think one concern… I know the Vikings are interested in Sage Rosenfels. But I dont think they will budge above a third rounder. What did Houston give to get Matt Schab who was at the time a backup QB? Where would Sage go in the depth chart in Minnesota? If I was the Texans I would trade Sage with a Clause.. A third rounder in 2009 if sage only stays in the back up possition. But up to a second round pick in 2009 if he starts three or more games for the Vikings in 2008. But then again I dont think the Texans will trade Rosenfels. Learn from Atlanta…Bad things can happen thats why you should always try to have a quality backup in key positions.

Wow I just looked at my last post and realized how a.d.d I am. I was going to start out with… One concern about Sage Rosenfels going to the Vikings would be… How they would be able to transition the Offense From Jacksons Skill set… To Rosenfels In the event that Jackson got injured… They have to opposite playing styles.. Now that I finished that thought…. Another good trade would be… A third rounder this year… and if Sage starts 3+ games during the season they would get an additional third rounder in 2009.. Or any combination of use based packages….

You dont think Sage is worth a Third? Or just a proformance based compensation system. Where if I trade a backup and he remains a back up on your team.. He would only be worth a third rounder or less.. And if I trade a backup and he assumes a role of a starter.. that proves he had a greater value.. And the trade would be deserving of a higher pick?

“go screw”, the Jags did want him back. They signed Cleo Lemon because he was content to be a #2 behind a #1 that’s not going anywhere, a spot that Gray was trying to get away from. Clearly, Gray and/or his agent miscalculated his open market value. The Jags didn’t sit around and wait for him.
I also don’t buy the idea that Gray has no shot as passing Rosenfels on the depth chart. Gray played at least equally well in his starts (certainly far more so in week 17 when the two went head to head) and is far more athletically gifted - and still a bit more raw, certainly. But the idea that there’s no shot is preposterous.

Gray did a great job in Jacksonville. Don’t forget, when Garrard went down, the Jags began a 3 game road trip with Gray as the starter. They went 2-1 with the lone loss really to blame on a defense that didn’t match up well with the spread offense New Orleans ran. I think he felt he could get a crack at a starting job somewhere else. I feel the reason the Jags let him go (and scooped up Cleo Lemon) was to let him test the market. He wanted more than they would pay and it looks like he found out his value was not as strong as he felt it was. The thing about Gray is that he is VERY prepared for game day. He studies like he’s going to start and filled in nicely when his number was called. If the Jags knew they could have him at that price, they might have kept him. They still have Lester Ricard (who?) on the practice squad and will likely take a stab at this grab bag of QB prospects with one of their 3 3rd round picks.

dick_curl is right…getting paid vet minimum makes it obvious he is 3rd string…
apparently there is nobody who wants to offer Gray…the NFL scouts must know something…if anyone cared, he’d be offered more by somebody…
unless Texas’ no income tax plays into this, I don’t see Gray supplanting Rosie…this is only 40K for a good camp arm, and probably 3rd string

That sounds like a cheap contract for a QB that went 2-1 on the road last year as a fill in for the injured starter. What was Jack Del thinking?
