When the San Francisco 49ers cut veteran quarterback Trent Dilfer this month, it seemed likely that his career was over.
The 36-year-old Dilfer started six games for the 49ers last season, passing for 1,166 yards with seven touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 55.1 passer rating before being lost for the season with a concussion. That’s not exactly the profile of a guy who’s going to be a highly sought free agent.
But Dilfer may have a job offer that would allow him to play another season without having to move his family. The Fresno Bee reports that Dilfer said today that the Oakland Raiders are showing interest in signing him.
Dilfer was speaking at Easter services at Northside Christian Church in Clovis, California, when he said the Raiders have expressed interest. The church is near Fresno State University, where Dilfer was a star quarterback, and the Bee reports that some in the church cheered.
If he were to sign with Oakland, Dilfer would serve as a backup and mentor to JaMarcus Russell, who is expected to become the starter in 2008 after being the first pick in the 2007 NFL draft. The Raiders also have Andrew Walter on the roster, and it is possible that Daunte Culpepper will re-sign with Oakland.

i hope Dilfer can help 2007’s 1st, pick jamarcus russell, as much as he helped 2005’s 1st pick, alex smith, become an all pro.
things are finally looking up for the silver and black.

What amazes me is that more teams aren’t showing interest in Culpepper.

I think this is just a ploy to squeeze Culpepper to come back cheap.

This would be a better move if they brought him in as a QB coach. It’d be cheaper and that’s really the only reason they are considering signing him.

Culpepper has done everything he has to do to get a big offer from the Raiders. Blown ACL? Check. No one wants him? Check. The Raiders should be all over him right now. 10 years, $120 million.
