Former Steelers receiver Cedrick Wilson has issued a statement regarding the Wednesday night incident that resulted in his release:

“First I would very much like to apologize in every way possible to Lindsey Paulat, our child, her family, my family, friends and the NFL community,” Wilson said in a statement that was sent to PFT, and possibly elsewhere. “My actions last night were totally inappropriate, unacceptable and not up to the standards that I try to maintain in my life. What I did was wrong in every way and I take full and complete responsibility for my actions.   I am going to seek counseling and work on these issues in my personal life and work to do what is best for our child and her future. Right now that is what is important.”

We’re told that Wilson ultimately was charged with simple assault, harassment, and disorderly conduct. He wasn’t arrested at the scene; instead, police picked him up at his apartment. We’re told that Paulat, the ex-girlfriend whom he allegedly struck at a Mexican restaurant, didn’t want him to be arrested.

The Steelers moved quickly to part ways with Wilson, advising him of the impending release even before he was formally charged. It reminds us of the manner in which the Steelers handled linebacker Richard Siegler’s situation last year, when he was dumped by the team even before he was picked up on charges of being a pimp.

Though Wilson has the right to file a grievance regarding the move, it’s unlikely that he will do so. One thing that could change Wilson’s position would be an effort by the team to recoup the portion of Wilson’s signing bonus applicable to 2008, the final year of his contract. For now, however, the team isn’t expected to do so.
