Perhaps in response to criticism of the comments of Steelers chairman Dan Rooney regarding the decision of the team to cut backup receiver Cedrick Wilson and keep linebacker James Harrison when the two players essentially engaged in the same conduct, the team has issued a statement that attempts to clarify Mr. Rooney’s remarks.
Here’s the full text of the release:
To clarify the comments made earlier regarding the conduct of our players, in no way do we condone domestic violence of any kind. Each incident must be considered on a case-by-case basis
In the situation with James Harrison, he contacted us immediately after his incident and has taken responsibility for his actions.
“In today’s decision with Cedrick Wilson, we determined the situation was severe enough to warrant the player being released immediately.
“We trust that today’s roster move will indicate our intentions and send a message that we will not tolerate this type of conduct.”
Um, we’re not sure that this really clarifies anything. Wilson, as we understand it, was cut before he was even charged — and he has taken full responsibility.
No matter what the team says, people are going to believe that Harrison got to stay with the team because he’s a star, and Wilson didn’t because he isn’t. And those people probably are right.
Moving forward, things definitely will get interesting when the next Steeler player gets arrested for roughing up a female. If, for example, the culprit is Ben Roethlisberger or Willie Parker or Hines Ward, will the team reiterate its message? Or will the team find a way to distinguish the situations?
“Well, you see, Cedrick’s incident happened on a Wednesday. This one happened on a Saturday. And we all know that Saturday night’s all right for fighting.”
Ideally, the players will simply get the message, and none of them will strike, push, shove, choke, kick, punch, cold cock, knee, elbow, head butt, tackle, bend, break, and/or bop any of the ladies in their lives.

It was bad with Harrison. The weight of that made it worse with Wilson. By the time they came out with a statement, as a Steelers fan, I just wished the team didn’t say anything. Now, they’ve opened up the bottle and any slim hope they may have had to quell the situation went down the tubes. Now, as you point out, Mr. Florio, they’ve set a bad precedent. While it could be true, the last thing a good spin doctor wants to do is play the “case-by-case basis” card. To the public and fans, all that means is “player-by-player.”
The worst part of it is, Wilson probably had a five percent chance of making the team in 2008 anyway. With Nate Washington likely to sign his RFA tender ($1.4 million), it’s highly unlikely they would have kept Ced around for the amount of money he was owed to lose out on the third WR position for the second straight year.

I don’t like that Dan Rooney justifies instead of just telling the truth! I think people would have more respect for others in authority if those in command just said, “Yes, I kept the star (woman abuser) because he’s a star, despite my moral convictions … and I released the woman abuser because he simply, well, sucks.”
Don’t set yourself up to be Mr. Morality and hold some people to different standards than others. If you do that, then at least admit it.

How sad is it that it’s up to the league and the teams to even send out a message as simple as this one?

Amended statement by Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney:
“Yeah there’s a difference and a reason why we cut one man and we didn’t cut the other and it’s a simple one. JAMES HARRISON IS BAT-POOP CRAZY! You want me to cut him… did you see what he did to that dude in Cleveland that ran on to the field. I’m not going to cut him are you nuts? Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg?
His nickname is Silverback… freaking Silverback.. you tell a dude named Silverback that he don’t work here… Jebus H. Cripes.. cut harrison….
Go sell Crazy somewhere else we’re all stocked up here.”

The point is that this is Ced’s second offense and Harrison’s first. So I don’t understand where the double standard is.
Also, I don’t condone hitting women under any circumstance, but the two situations were completely different and merit different punishments. Harrison was in the midst of an argument and hit a girl with an open hand (which is NOT OK). Ced went into a bar, walked up to a girl and ‘punched her in the face’. Those, I believe, are two completely different situations and should not be handled the same, especially since it was Ced’s 2nd offense.
