Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he wants his off-season moves to make people say “wow.”
He may be close to a trade that would do just that.
Citing unnamed NFL sources, Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Cowboys are attempting to acquire suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Pacman Jones, and that trade talks between the teams are intensifying to the point that one person close to the talks predicts a deal could be completed in the next week.
As compensation for Pacman, Dallas would send the Titans a mid-round draft pick, Schefter reports.
Jones is certainly talented enough that if he could get on the field, stay on the field and stay out of trouble, he’d be worth a mid-round pick. But can Jones do those things? That’s the big question. Jones is suspended and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will determine his status for 2008 before training camps open. Although a player can be traded while he’s suspended, the Cowboys would presumably want to trade for Jones only if they think there’s a good chance he’ll be permitted to play in 2008.
If the Cowboys add Jones, they’ll have two of the three players who were the league’s poster boys for bad behavior at this time last year. During the 2007 season they signed former Bear Tank Johnson, and now they appear to be closing in on acquiring Pacman. Perhaps they should contact the Bengals and inquire about the availability of Chris Henry.

Colin Cowherd was talking about this a couple of weeks ago, and said it was a terrible idea because Dallas/Ft Worth is like the strip club capitol of the world. He suggested the best spot for Jones was Seattle, because they don’t have many strip clubs there, and the ones they do have are terrible.

Good to see that Jerry’s assembling a team every bit as classy as he is.

It fits. Jones has shown he’s willing to take a gamble on players with dubious records but fantastic skill.
When he decided to clean up the ‘Boys, they stopped winning playoff games. Maybe he’s decided the high road is overrated; he’ll increase the peril to bouncers and profit to strippers if it means the team wins.

Well, Vox, I could have went with the “11 years without a playoff win” card, but I thought the “class” card was more suitable for this particular column.

Yo Nigel - don’t put too much stock in Cowherd. He is intertaining but his record in his Friday football picks should tell you that he doesn’t know half as much about football as he thinks he does. Pacman is a huge risk for Dallas, but a mid round pick is a decent gamble for a player of his caliber - especially since Jerry Jones draft record without Jimmy Johnson and Bill Parcells is downright horrible.

I bet there aren’t that many strip clubs in Green Bay…
But anyway, Dallas has a right to get him, even though he allegedly was one of the main catalysts in a man becoming paralyzed for life, which is messed up.
But this move should truly help Dallas, if he can still play. I’d offer more of an incentive-inspired deal as opposed to lots of guaranteed cash, and go from there.

Dear (readers and) scary Jerry, the real issue here is NOT Quackmans past. T.O. is a good example. His 3 year deal was really a one year deal and he could have been cut anytime if he acted up and the contract would have absolved with minimal loss. Jerry could easily do the same with Quackman, and a mid round pick is worth a gamble for that potential talent. The REAL issue here is Jerry saying he wanted to WOW people this offseason. Jerry, are you out to win or please people? Your team was 13-3, had a record 13 pro bowlers,(OK you lost in the first playoff game but read on) and you have done a pretty good job with the cap to maintain the key ingredients for future success. You have 2 first round draft picks to work with. Your main needs are a compliment to Marion Barber, which could easily be had in the 2,3,or 4 rounds(see past RB historys) You need a third corner(use one of the first rounders on some quality corners coming out this year) and find a quality WR with speed in case(and in all probability) Terry Glenn is no longer effective. All these could be filled in the draft, and that is essentially all you need this year if you do your homework for draft day. That would WOW me just fine. But given your history of drafting without Jimmy Johnson or Bill Parcells, I guess I see why you are more worried about WOWing people than actually using common sense. Again, I have no problem in and of itself with a low risk-high reward gamble on Sir Quackalot, just remember the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing. Forget WOWing people and focus on what the true team needs are. Weigh Luxury vs. neccessity. You are a shrewd business man, you know what is right. Or do you? But I realize you want to WOW people with a new stadium for next year and want to sell tickets, even at the expense perhaps of good football common sense and judgement. Time will tell us all if you use sound judgement. You are close to winning it all, dont blow it!!! What better way to WOW people than to win a Super Bowl(paging Mr. Coughlin–can you bear witness!!)

The reason why players like Pacman, Tank and TO act they way they do is because they know no matter how much trouble they get into another team (Dallas) will give them millions of dollars anyway. The NFL should start punishing the team, along with the player, for a player’s off the field conduct. Would Jones trade for Pacman knowing that if Pacman beats up a stripper it could cost Jones $500,000 and a 2nd round draft pick?

Maybe Jerry will hire some ex-Steelers next to complete his special teams unit. Attention strippers, you may be wise to take some of that extra Pac Man money and invest in a Bodyguard!

dcmfcowboys, this is what Jerry Jones said regarding “wow”.
“In our particular case, we’ve got a better quarterback, Tony Romo, than we had starting last season now going into this season. That’s big. And I think we have a chance to put some more “wow” in this offense. That’s my No. 1 goal in this off-season. And that’s not to imply, with the third-best offense in the league, that I was disappointed in the “wow.”

Vox, you’re absolutely right. Teams DO take chances. My point is that Jones takes them all the time, announces that this player and/or that coach is the “savior” and when the playoffs come around Dallas has nothing to show for it. After 11 years, it might be time for Jones to re-think his strategy. He may want to lay off the “turds” (thanks florio!) for awhile and try to round up a few guys that are more interested in winning playoff games than seeing their names in the papers. What, ultimately, has “getya popcorn ready” done for the Cowboys? Any rings yet? Any playoff wins? Regular season don’t mean a thing if you ain’t got the ring.

qd82 - So as long as a guy is not a KNOWN pedophile, anything goes? And you’re okay with that? Wow. That’s a interesting view of life you’ve got there. Maybe you can petition every state’s Governor to release all the incarcerated felons (that AREN’T pedophiles) that can run a 4.6 forty or better and start a new “Longest Yard” League.
