Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that Tennessee Titans center Kevin Mawae is expected to replace Troy Vincent as president of the NFL Players Association.

Though the NFLPA has not yet announced the ascension of Mawae, Executive Director Gene Upshaw confirmed the end of former president Troy Vincent’s term:

Troy will be remembered as one of the NFLPA’s great leaders.  I’ve worked with past presidents like John Mackey, Bill Curry, Mike Kenn, Tom Condon and Trace Armstrong, and all were willing to make sacrifices and risk their careers to advance the cause of the players.  Troy joins these men in leaving his footprints in the sand of time and setting the standard for our next leader.   Troy, we will miss you, and we thank you for your concern and leadership as NFLPA president.”

Mawae is a 14-year veteran, and he’s proven in the past that he’s willing to speak his mind.  Last year, he pointed to his willingness to stir things up as the basis for his termination with the Jets after the arrival of coach Eric Mangini.

The last thing you want is a guy that knows all the rules in there and I definitely would’ve been one of the guys to call him out on it,” Mawae said.  “It all boils down to accountability.  You want a player to be accountable and the player wants the coaches to be accountable, and I think that may have been an issue there.”
