Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe reports that 22 teams were in attendance for the Boston College Pro Day workout, which featured quarterback Matt Ryan.
Reiss has the full list of scouts and execs and coaches. Herm Edwards of the Chiefs was the only head coach in attendance. Also present was Chiefs G.M. Carl Peterson, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, and quarterbacks coach Dick Curl.
[UPDATE: Though expected to attend, Reiss tells us that ”Dick Curl was a late scratch.” (That’s hilarious . . . and it’s even funnier if it was unintentional.)]
The hometown Patriots sent only two scouts.
Said Edwards regarding the session, during which Ryan threw 52 passes:
“I thought he pressed a couple times, trying to throw the ball a little too hard. That’s generally what happens with quarterbacks, when you get the media there. It used to be 10-15 years ago, the workouts, five people were there. Now, depending who you are, what school you’re at, and where people slate you being drafted, it becomes this. Which is kind of good, because it puts a lot of pressure on the kids, and the game everyone plays, there is going to be pressure on them. You look at that, and also understand that they’re going to press some. He pressed some throws, but the thing this guy has is his ability to win. That’s the thing you like about quarterbacks — some guys win, some guys don’t. You can look at all the stats, arm strength, you can look at all the different things, but at the end, can he win games? This guy has done that.”

I smell a trade-up from KC. You don’t send your HC across the country as a smokescreen.

After hearing what a great work out he had, and scouts calling him a franchise QB. He wont make it past the Falcons who need a QB desperately. Plus the Falcons can gamble with drafting Ryan because their coach is in his first year so they wont haft to win right away. They can develop him and be afforded the time it takes till he is ready.

Matt Leinart is a winner too, right?

Chiefs must trade for Troy Smith!!! How do guys like Edwards, who butcher time-management, consistently underachieve, and value QBs based on THE TALENT AROUND THEM maintain jobs for this long?

Chiefs won’t have to trade up for Ryan. If the Chiefs pass, I don’t think the Ravens will take him. The Pats will probably trade back at #7, but to who? Cowboys to take McFadden or McLeodis (or any other Irishman)?
Also, Spielman was there too, and he is basically a GM with a different title (VP-Player Personnel), so the Vikings are checking him out in case he falls into the teens ,which just may happen.
Don’t see Ryan slipping past Panthers or Bears, however.

Please… please… please… as a die-hard Chiefs fan, let this be a smokescreen to force the Falcons into further mediocrity.
They can have the second coming of Alex Smith and his muffin-stump hands.
What good would drafting Matt Ryan do if he’s just going to get killed by our lack of O-line. Just let Jake Long drop to us.

After watching Matt Ryan pull off several wins throughout his time at BC, i think he definitely has what it takes to become a solid franchise QB. Matt Ryan never had the weapons that Matt Leinart had and still put up great numbers. I can see KC possibly trading up from 5th to Atlantas 3rd. That could allow ATL to potentially get Dorsey for cheaper, if they decide to take him dispite his mysterious injury report.
NC State chose Marcus Stone over Matt Ryan a few years back….great move Chuck Amato

Why would you smell a “trade up”? I don’t think I’ve seen any mocks as of late with Ryan going in the Top 5 other than to KC, so I don’t think he’s going to be gone before they draft. If anything it is a smokescreen. Chiefs need OT, Long probably is gone by 5, and if they send a strong message that they are interested in Ryan, they can probably get more of a return in a trade down the board. I think they’d prefer not to draft Clady or Chris Williams at #5 like what the Cards were forced to do with Levi Brown last year.
Besides, Herm and Carl seem dedicated (to a fault) to Brodie Croyle this season and their other needs are much more pressing.

He will really, very honestly make it past the Falcons. Brohm is the top QB on the Falcon’s draft board, and for good reason.

Kansas City is either staying at No. 5 or trading down. They’ve spent too much time with Brodie Croyle and they’re not going to back down now. They need offensive line help bad, which is why I believe they will be selecting Ryan Clady. The Falcons, as stated before, desperately need a QB because I don’t think Joey Harrington, Chris Redman, or D.J. Shockley are even remote answers to their QB dilemma.

Matt Ryan has all the physical skills needed to succeed. More importantly he has the maturity and attitude needed to succeed at the next level. I look for big things from him in the future, wherever he may end up.

Are you kidding me with this guy? He would be a 2nd round pick most seasons. None of the QB’s in this draft will be more than marginal starters in the league. Don’t go by what they did in college. If you take Ryan this high, he has to play immediately, which will leave him in the overmatched QB pile of garbage that we get draft in draft out. Another year, another overhyped “franchise” quarterback sold to us. Then the predictors never back up why they ever rated them that high. I remember how they drooled all over Alex Smith 3 years ago. How’s that going for the 49ers? It’s the hardest position in sports to play and in turn eats most guys up and spits them out. He’s not exceptional athletically so he shouldn’t be a number 1 pick, period.

Kansas City should have sent the entire defensive coaching staff… after Ryan throws INT after INT, it’s the defense that will be on the field all the time.
19 INTs his senior year = Brett Favre minus the TDs in the NFL.

And frankly, for the Chiefs, why does it matter who’s the team’s quarterback. If it’s Croyle or if it’s Ryan, either one will be spending more time on the turf than actually completing passes given how bad their offensive line will be. At some point they need to come to terms that Shields and Roaf aren’t coming out of retirement.

Chiefs could also have some interest in fellow BC teammate Gosder Cherilus, who could be a late first-round/early second-round pick at offensive tackle. Not that KC would send their big guns out for a guy like that, but they did get a look at someone who could be around in round two. It’s funny, the KC Star really hasn’t mentioned anything about the team’s alleged interest in Ryan. Maybe Teicher’s on vacation?
