Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Denver Broncos have traded restricted free-agent offensive lineman Chris Myers to the Houston Texans for a sixth-round pick.
Because the Broncos had tendered Myers at the lowest level (which would have given them a sixth-round draft pick as compensation), the trade works out essentially the same way as it would have if Myers had signed an offer sheet with the Texans and the Broncos had declined to match the offer. John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Texans wanted to get the deal done easily and quickly, which is why they worked it out as a trade, rather than a free-agent signing.
Myers, who has played his entire three-year career for the Broncos (including 2005, when Texans coach Gary Kubiak was the offensive coordinator), is versatile enough to play either guard or center. The Texans are expected to play him at center.
Myers signed a four-year, $11 million contract that includes $3 million guaranteed.

First Shanahan runs the G.M. outta town , now he trades his starting center away. So goes the downward spiral that is the Denver Broncos. They remind me of the 1999-2000 S.F. 49ers right before the bottom fell out.

Why? How does a sixth round draft pick upgrade over a starting OL who can play either guard and center? I think the game has passed Shanahan by…as a coach and a GM.

First of all Myers was not the starting center. Tom Nalen ring a bell? Sencond of all, unlike the 49ers the broncos have pro bowl caliber players in Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, Elvis Dumervil, Champ Bailey, DJ Williams. Not to mention many other young formidable players who have potential to be good in their own right. You sir should check your facts before posting such ignorant statements.

Myers is the back-up center, Tom Nalen is the starter. Nalen went down to injury and Myers stepped up and played well. He would have had a good shot at becoming the starting guard this year though. Hopefully we can replace him with that draft pick since this years draft is deep at OT and OG.

This deal stinks for Denver worse than a Lenny Pastabelly tee-shirt in July. Although, its debatable whether his July tee-shirts smell any worse than the January ones. And I’m not even factoring in one of Len’s famous up-tempo pilates workouts!

It’s not that bad. So we lost depth. I heard TD is reentering the draft this year. Shanny plans to use the 6th round pick he acquired via this trade on him!
All will be well as long as Cutler and B-marsh is around…

Picking up a young starter for a 6th round pick… Houston is quietly having a very nice offseason.

Correction, he traded the backup center… Future Hall of Famer Tom Nalen is Denver’s starting center. Houston overpaid, though Myers is tough, and Nalen only has 1-2 more years left in the tank. Don’t love the move from Denver’s view, but I think you can cound on Denver targeting OL early and often in the draft starting with Clady, Williams or Otah in the #12 hole.

Overpaid? A sixth round pick for a 26 year old lineman signed for 4 years at 11 million that can start at center or guard. That doesn’t look like overpaying to me. Denver’s line is already thin, what purpose does it serve to trade depth and talent for sixth round picks?

Interesting to see whether McKinney gets cut or reworked and benched, or whether one of the centres slides over to guard, with Weary or (more likely) Pitts getting benched.
I really like what the Texans are doing this off-season - adding relatively cheap, young free agents at positions of need so that they can be free to take BPA throughout the draft.

If you listen closely, you can here the roar of approval from Oakland.
