A year ago, Saints running back Reggie Bush spent most of the spring at home in California, rather than participating in the team’s off-season conditioning program.
But Saints coach Sean Payton says he’s expecting Bush to participate fully in team workouts this off-season.
“He’s planning on being involved in all of our off-season which is encouraging and good,” Payton said. “It’s important for him, especially with running backs and the pounding they take to be real diligent in the weight room. . . . I think Reggie as well as the rest of the guys understand the significance of this time of the year and how it helps you as you move into the start of the season.”
Although most off-season workouts are voluntary, Bush needs to be there. A few highlight-reel runs aside, Bush has been a disappointment so far in his two-year NFL career. If Bush were to follow up his 581-yard 2007 season by spending his off-season on his own in California, he’d likely face resentment from his teammates who were sweating together in New Orleans.

Yeah that FreeFloDo stuff looked tight, and I’m sure it gave him great cardio, but not so much in getting him physically prepared to take a pounding. Good choice, he can do the FreeFloDo in between team-sanctioned activities.

A lot of good things happened to Reggie in his rookie year, but his second season certainly didn’t go as he had planned. Bush is such a gifted athlete that he’s never really had to prepare in order to dominate; rather his speed and ability always just gave him an edge. It’s nice to see him realize that he has to be dedicated to excel like that in the NFL. Although I still have my concerns about his game, I’m considering this development a good sign.

I think if it helps him break into 700 yard territory, the Saints should let him do whatever he wants.

2 years of Bush so far and Houston looks good by not making him the number one overall pick.

Y’all are missing the point. Reggie Bush is dating Kim Kardashian. THAT is why he’s staying in CA. Wouldn’t you?

700? thats still a big disappointment for a top 5 pick, he needs a 1000 yard season or two

700 yards not enough for a top 5 RB pick, he needs a couple 1000 yard seasons before he starts skipping team workouts

The issue with Reggie is that while he’s fast, most of his “moves” only work in the open field. I took alota heat before his draft saying that he should be moved to WR but now his career’s saying it all for me. He reminds me of a taller, stronger Steve Smith: natural hands catcher, great vertical & high-points the ball, breakaway speed & open field moves that make guys look silly.
Bottom line is that he can’t run between the tackles and he can’t turn the corner like he could at USC cause NFL defenses are too fast. IMO until somebody wises up, his potential will remain tantalizingly out of reach.
