We’ve gotten our eyeballs on the contract signed 13 days ago by Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Here are the key details.
First, he received only (only?!?) $25.2 million in bonus money, all of it coming in the form of a signing bonus. And with a $4 million base salary guarantee (for injury) in 2009 and a $4 million base salary guarantee (for injury) in 2010, Roethlisberger’s total actual guarantee is $33.2 million.
His practical guarantee is more like $38.7 million, since he gets a $2.5 million base salary for 2008 and a $3 million roster bonus due on the second day of the 2009 league year.
The base salaries are $2.5 million in 2008, $4.75 million in 2009, $8.05 million in 2010, $11.6 million each year from 2011 through 2014, and $12.1 million in 2015.
The total? $102 million, on the nose.
Under our analysis of the deal, 2011 seems to be the first year in which the Steelers could financially justify dumping or trading Roethlisberger, if for some reason it’s not working out.
