Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have reached an agreement on a one-year contract with free agent defensive back Eugene Wilson.
Per Schefter, the contract is a one-year, $1.8 million deal that includes $500,000 guaranteed and $400,000 in incentives, which could bring the total value to the contract to $2.2 million.
Wilson, who has played his entire five-year career with the New England Patriots, is versatile enough to play anywhere in the secondary, but the Buccaneers plan to play him at cornerback. Wilson started six games at safety for the Patriots last year.
The Tennessee Titans were also reportedly interested in Wilson. Schefter reports that shortly before Wilson finalized the deal with the Buccaneers, the Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings jumped in to see if they could sign him, but by then Wilson had made the decision to go to Tampa Bay.

So essentially he got a one year, prove he will not get injured contract. He is a good safety just too injury prone thus far in his career.

If he can play CB for the BUCS, it is a great signing. B. Kelly CB is gone to bluer pastures in Lionsland.

Our Cornerback stable looks a little bit brighter after this signing. I wouldn’t mind us adding a young CB through the draft but I don’t think we should draft one before the 3rd round. Because in the Tampa 2, we don’t need superstars at CB to dominate, only a couple smart hard-hitting Safeties like Tanard Jackson and Jermaine Phillips.

Interesting that the Vikes chimed in. Wonder if they too wanted him at cornerback, since we too run the cover 2. I doubt it. They probably were looking for him to replace Mike Doss on special teams.

It is interesting that the Vikes chimed in at the last second. The Vikes also run the Tampa 2, and Tampa moving Wilson to CB surly at least has to raise the question? Right? Were the Vikings too hoping to convert Wilson to corner?
Well, probably not. Charles Gordon is coming off a great season where he played excellent in extended time. The question mark for the Vikings is Winfield. He is a tackling machine; his cover sills have deminished over the past few seasons. Rumor in last offseason was the Vikings would be moving Winfield to the slot with addition of McCauley (everybody who has actually WATCHED McCaulley play in his rookie season just laughed into their cup of coffee). … but is Wilson changing positions an upgrade? No.
The interest in Wilson is simple, replace Mike Doss on special teams.

I think cover2 corner may be the best place for him.

Tampa also plays a lot of man, bump coverage. Not JUST a Tampa 2. If we do not go with an explosive Wide Out in the first round, like a Desean Jackson out of Cal. **Fills the void at punt return, and can go deep with Spurlock on kick off return.** The kid can straight up FLY. Can learn the finer points of the receiver position from Joey Galloway. Sit and learn for a year or so, then step in as a dominate stretch the field receiver.
If we do not go that route, we MUST select a solid corner. Because Kiffen DOES run more than Tampa 2, and because of the lack of solid depth at the position. I will be throwing things at my TV if we go in any other direction.

Get ready to bash your TV in Troy because the Bucs shouldn’t go CB in the 1st round because they haven’t selected a CB in the 1st round for all of the 12 offseasons Monte Kiffin has been here. Thus further proving that Monte Kiffin and his Tampa 2 scheme doesn’t need a superstar at either LCB, RCB or Slot to get solid production from the position. Also you’re right, the Bucs don’t just play the Tampa 2, they play Cover 1, Cover 2, Cover 3 and Cover 4 type coverages about 70% of the time. Thus leaving the other 30% for man coverages.

A first round CB is usually a man-to-man cover guy, and the skills we need are a little more diverse (and also can be found in later rounds).
