We’ve gotten confirmation from another source that running back Kevin Jones has been informed by the Detroit Lions that he will be released.
It’s not known whether the move has been made official.
Jones was a first-round pick of the Lions in 2004. A serious foot injury suffered during the 2006 season marred much of the 2007 campaign for him, and we’re told that there was concern that he might not be healthy for the start of the 2008 regular season.
The only other running backs currently on the roster are Brian Calhoun, Aveion Cason, and Tatum Bell.

The Lions have Tatum Bell on their roster. He was re-signed last week despite being benched for the final 11 games last year. Apparently, that was all Mike Martz’ fault.

That last part isn’t true. We re-signed Tatum Bell a few days ago. OK, maybe he shouldn’t count. Looks like Jonathan Stewart will be a Detroit Lion.

Even with Tatum Bell on the roster, you’ve got to think the Lions will make a serious run at Shaun Alexander once he hits the market.

I’d rather see them draft a RB but not in the 1st. They need Ol first and foremost. Maybe snag like Ray Rice with one of the 3rd round picks.

Perhaps this paves the way for the Lions to trade up in the draft with my Chiefs to secure Run DMC??? I’d love for us to trade down and still get Clady or Ochs!

Bad move by the lions. Its a shame. He’s a great talent, who has had a two bad injuries, but has shown potential when healthy to be a great back. Why all of a sudden cut him now? the cap space you save isn’t worth it when you consider the potential he has. Another example of poor management by the lions.

This is incredible!!! Why would we…or should I say why would Matt Millen would want to do this move before the draft???? Might as well just tell everyone that we want a running back at #15!!! Sorry, but I do not understand this one!!!!! …Tatum Bell…yeah right!!!

Yeah, I think Detroit’s probably painted a bullseye on Mr. Alexander. Come to think of it, K.J. would look awfully good in a Bears uniform and would have some extra incentive at least two games a year. A definite upgrade over Chicago’s current crop of RBs!

You would think the Lions would go after Alexander when he is released but I’m not so sure he fits well there. However, I can’t imagine the Lions going into the season with Bell, Cason, and Calhoun as their RB’s so if they could get SA cheap, that might be an option for them because who else is available, outside of the draft?

Somewhere, Matt Millen has his fingers crossed, hoping that RB Darren McFadden falls to Detroit in the first round. Of course, if McFadden DOESN’T fall, Millen can always draft another wideout.
