ESPN reports that Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers is expected to start on Sunday against the Pats.
On the surface, it’s an easy decision. There’s no tomorrow. If the Chargers lose, the season is over. So why not give it a go?
But Rivers has a partially torn ACL. If the thing tears completely, San Diego’s preparations for the 2008 campaign will be significantly undermined as Rivers misses most if not all of the offseason program, during which much of the offense is installed for the upcoming season.
So there’s definitely a risk here for the Chargers. Win or lose, the Chargers have a great boost of momentum heading into 2008. If, however, Rivers goes down today, the horizon suddenly will get darker for the team with the lightning bolt logo.
