NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
presented by

The New Orleans Saints were the biggest
surprise of the 2006 season. And but for the departure of receiver
Joe Horn, the roster looks every bit as good as it did when they made it
as far as the NFC title game.
Here's what the Saints should target in
the draft, in order to make it another step. Or two.
1. Receiver: Horn became the
face of the franchise after the Katrina disaster. But after an
ugly divorce Horn is now playing for the Falcons. And the Saints
will rely on Marques Colston to complete the transformation from
throwaway draft pick to No. 1 wideout. Though the team also has
David Patten and Devery Henderson and Terrance Copper, they'd benefit
from a clear-cut No. 2.
2. Cornerback: This need could
be addressed, if the Colts don't match the offer sheet that Jason David
recently signed with the Saints. Even if the Colts don't match,
the Saints might want to consider a late-round throwaway on another
corner. After all, you never know where the next Marques Colston
might be lurking.
3. Offensive tackle: Jamaal
Brown became a Pro Bowler on the left side, but the team could use an
upgrade over Jon Stinchcomb on the right side.
4. Tight end: Eric Johnson was
added to a short-term deal via free agency. But if Greg Olsen
falls to No. 27 in round one, look for Sean Payton to pounce.
5. Defensive tackle: Hollis
Thomas decided to stay put, which is good. But he's 33, which is
not so good. They need a beast for the future.
6. Quarterback: The Saints
need to start grooming a guy who can be a reliable backup to Drew Brees.
His primary backup, Jamie Martin, is 37.
